Google Reader was launched in 2005 as Google Labs before emerging as its own product in 2007. This product helped people to discover and keep tabs on their favorite websites. Also its social features let users friend, follow and share stories with others. The product has a huge fan base but over the years usage has declined. So, with 3 months prior notice to all users, Google Reader will be shutdown. Notice is given so that users & developers, will have sufficient time to find an alternative feed-reading solution.
Confirmed date of shutdown is on July 1, 2013
Google mentioned in their official blog saying
There are two simple reasons for this: usage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company we’re pouring all of our energy into fewer products. We think that kind of focus will make for a better user experience.
- CalDAV API
- Google Building Maker
- Google Cloud Connect
- Google Voice App for Blackberry.
- Search API for Shopping
- Snapseed Desktop for Macintosh and Windows
But the biggest blow i feel is Google Reader. Users and developers interested in RSS alternatives can export their data, including their subscriptions, with Google Takeout till July 1st 2013.

It’s one of those things I use once a year so probably won’t care. I’d rather see Google focus on improving search.
Its all about the usage right.. but i completely agree with you that Google now should focus on improving search engine..
Always loved this feature from Google but now i shifted to Feedly…..
I love Feedly.. its awesome.. but will miss Google Reader for sure..
